Here's an opinion that will positively shock some readers. I think this is a silly judgment:
Muslim girls in France could be barred from wearing headscarves in schools after an expert commission recommended a ban on "conspicuous" religious signs...So long as the attire in question, or the item in question, doesn't impede the learning of others, distract others with flashing lights and bells and whistles, and doesn't prevent free movement around the school, I don't really see a problem with "conspicuous" religious signs. If you want to wear your "I've Got a Hard On For Allah" or "Jesus Isn't Just a Mexican Gardener" t-shirt, knock yourself out. If you want to drag a giant cross on wheels (on wheels? did Jesus' cross have wheels?) through the hallway like the loonies in Campus Crusade for Christ, then we might have to talk. The ban would outlaw the Jewish kippa, large Christian crosses and the Islamic headscarf, which would be considered overt religious symbols.
"Discreet" medallions and pendants which merely confirm the person's religious faith would be allowed.
[Bernard Stasi] added that the commission's proposed law was intended so people of all religions could "live together in public places".Because clearly that can only happen if we know as little about each other's personal beliefs as possible. As an atheist, it's a given to me that the majority of those with whom I associate believe in some kind of magical sky pixie - it doesn't stop me from living in peace with them.
Now, their knocking on my door at 9am on a Sunday to save my soul might. Especially if they're French. But that's another story.
