This is the 21st Century, Right?

With this new Pope, it’s sometimes hard to tell.

The Pope has ordered his bishops to set up exorcism squads to tackle the rise of Satanism.

Vatican chiefs are concerned at what they see as an increased interest in the occult.

They have introduced courses for priests to combat what they call the most extreme form of “Godlessness.”

Each bishop is to be told to have in his diocese a number of priests trained to fight demonic possession.

Do some of you folks actually believe in this stuff?

Can I politely ask you to, please, join us in the real world?

I suppose we ought to be happy he’s at least not calling for another round of Inquisition good times.

Update: The Vatican is denying the report:

The Vatican is denying reports it plans to install more exorcists around the world so possessed people can get help quickly.

“Pope Benedict XVI has no intention of ordering local bishops to bring in garrisons of exorcists to fight demonic possession,” Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told reporters in Rome Friday.

Please note that they still believe demonic possession is real and that exorcism is something more than saying silly things in a dead language. They are still living in the mental Middle Ages.

I think the occult is nonsense; however, if you really wanted to answer this question about folks believing in this stuff, you shouldn’t look at the pope, but at the growing number of people who are actively trying to become witches or who are delving into the study of the occult.

My local bookstore gives twice the amount of shelf space to the occult than to math and science.

Don’t worry, Kevin. I think those people are nutters too. Witchcraft, astrology, ghosts, and demons. Hokum, the lot of them.

Hello whoever wrote this article (you don’t have your name under the heading as in most articles.),

I am a Roman Catholic with a bachelor’s degree in theology and who studied Biology for three years at the college level. Yes the Church believes in the existence of a real supernatural God and as such believes in a real supernatural realm of existence. To not believe in the supernatural world is to not believe that God truly exists because God is supernatural. And if God exists in the supernatural realm than it is possible that other beings can exist in a the supernatural realm such as angels and demons.

Understandably in this day and age where a belief in a true and living God starts to seem more ridiculous because we feel that we have learned so much through the rise of science that we feel with so many questions answered there must not be God and all things that people believed before the rise in material science must be nonsense.

You can take it or leave it, believe it is crazy. However for those who believe in a real Living God it is not hard to believe that there are beings in the supernatural world and that not all of them are good.

    God Bless
