Go Back Where You Came From
When people from other countries work very hard, abide by the laws of our land, and cut several large checks for assorted processing fees to the Federal government in order to gain American citizenship, why on Earth would we do this to them?
Just got an e-mail announcing that Lee Greenwood will headline a Fourth of July ceremony at Disney World in which 1,000 legal immigrants will be sworn in as citizens.
It seems our government is doing its best to welcome illegal immigrants with open arms, and then drive out the ones who did things the right way.
Lee. Freakin’. Cheesin’. Greenwood.
The ultimate in maudlin patriotic glurge set to music. Is there something wrong with a little ditty I like to call “The Star-Spangled Banner?”
What a dark, dark time it is for our great land!

As long as they don’t bring in Rosie to sing it, nothing at all.
Too bad Jimi Hendrix isn’t available.

Andy, we got the results of your CAT scan…
Not a patriotic bone in your body.

*raspberry*
OK, sure, I’m barely aware of who Lee Greenwood is. But a lot of people have tears standing in their eyes when they take the Pledge for the first time.
It’s kind of a perfect moment for a ‘maudlin patriotic glurge.’

Oh, I’m very patriotic - I love this country and think it’s the best country on the planet.
I just prefer not to celebrate that fact with really bad music.

My good friend is having this very problem right now. Her husband (illegal immigrant) took their family home to Mexico to do it right (paperwork, large checks and all) and cannot get back. Even with an employer who deserately wants him back, an American wife and daughter, letters to mayors and governers and congressmen from all of us, he still can’t get home. It’s infuriating to know that all we had to do was send him to flippin’ Florida on holiday.

See, I’d argue it’s precisely the wrong moment to cheapen such a vital and proud moment with a crap song that could only be made worse were it sung by Toby Keith.

Mr. Lady, why doesn’t he just skip across the border like the rest?

I sometimes think we should consider a new anthem, but definitely not Greenwood’s song.

Patrick, why do you hate America?

Because Allah has commanded it.

He did skip across, and then found a wife and had a child and he grew up and realized that he’d better get legal. It’s just unbelievably hard.
