From the Womb to the Tomb and in the Classroom

The latest news from the BBC involves paying kids to pass their exams. Last we checked, this was the province of parents, not the government – and certainly not the taxpaying public. School funding should be used for improving schools and the quality of education offered, not paying off children to put down their X-Box controller and do what is expected of them. Everyone should have equal opportunity to learn – however if a child chooses to be part of the chaff and not the wheat, that’s a personal decision, and not one that taxpayers should be forced to bribe them on. Let’s use those funds to instill a love of learning through better classes and teachers – not through reinforcing the notion that learning is drudgery to be endured. And we say this as a couple of former students who, had we been British and under this plan, would have made bank.
